Things aren’t always as they seem. People aren’t always who you think they are. More often than not we try to put on a show, to impress our friends and family, our work colleagues and superiors, or even strangers. We sometimes feel the pressure, to simply fit in.
Weddings are an event where you can easily get pulled into the frenzy of having to have everything perfect, the dress, the location, the reception. A trend. An event where people spend an enormous amount of money and time to get it just right, only to sometimes get disapponted by the final outcome of their special day.
I didn’t know what to expect from Kelly and Rik, as I often don’t from the weddings I capture.
This morning after going through their final images and thinking back to the day, there’s one thing I can say for sure. They were true to themselves and all those who surrounded them. Friends and family were invited to witness the joining of two people, a family, not a show. The little things that some might consider “bumps” along the road were what made this day even more special and unique. The day reflected who they are and all that they share. Unexpected tears were shed by many, even by me. (I fortunately get to hide mine behind the camera).
This is what I try to capture every time I have somebody in front of my lens, the raw essence of who they are. The true moments that make every day life special. I feel blessed that what I see, is something that other people appreciate. Something that makes other people happy. Something other people can’t take away from me.
So here they are, Kelly and Rik on their day, captured by me…
